Dr. David Anderson, P.E.

Interests

Dr. Anderson is currently Professor Emeritus at the Penn State University. He has worked in the asphalt technology area for more than 20 years. He is a native of Connecticut and received his BSCE and MS degrees from the University of Connecticut in 1962 and 1964, respectively. Dr. Anderson continued his research in the asphalt area at Purdue University and received his Ph.D. in 1971. After graduation he worked briefly on the research and development of roofing systems at Corning Glass Works and then joined West Virginia University in 1971. In 1975 he joined The Pennsylvania State University where he is currently Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Transportation Pavements and Materials Program at The Pennsylvania Transportation Institute.

At the Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Anderson has taught courses in introductory civil engineering materials, advanced asphalt materials and mixtures, pavement design, and soil mechanics. He has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than 30 pavement related projects with a value of approximately $10,000,000. These projects, which have included studies for FHWA, PennDOT, NCHRP, SHRP, and private industry, have dealt with asphalt properties, in-place recycling, baghouse fines, asphalt concrete mixture characterization, specification development, and test track evaluation. Dr. Anderson has authored more than 100 publications in the pavements and materials area and has published extensively in the Proceedings of AAPT and TRB.
Dr. Anderson has served as an expert witness and as a consultant to private industry, other consulting firms, and various agencies of the federal government. These activities have included the utilization of waste materials, development and evaluations of asphalt additives, pavement design and evaluation, and forensic studies of pavement failures. Dr. Anderson is one of the principals in Nittany Engineers and Management Consultants, a consulting firm that has conducted major research projects for FHWA and private industry.
