Facilities & Equipment

NECEPT Superpave Laboratories:

Accreditations:  NECEPT’s laboratories are AASHTO re:source accredited.

Our laboratory facilities are equipped and staffed to support pavements and materials-related research and development, as well as pavement load response and performance measurements. The binder and mixtures laboratories are equipped and staffed to perform all of the Superpave tests as well as other specialized binder and mixture, subbase and subgrade, and pavement material characterization tests.

NECEPT's Laboratory Equipment Includes:

  • Moisture-Induced Stress Tester
  • Hamburg Wheel Tracker
  • Semi-Circular Bend Tester
  • Texas Overlay Tester
  • Indirect Tensile (IDEAL) Machine
  • Close-Loop Servo-Hydraulic Systems
  • Third-Scale Model Mobile Load Simulator
  • RTFO and PAV Material Aging Equipment
  • Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) and Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR)
  • Various high shear blenders
  • Asphalt mixture compactors, ovens, scales, and sieve shakers

Test Track Facilities:

The Larson Transportation Institute’s (LTI’s) Test Track facilities at Penn State are available for NECEPT’s in-situ field durability testing of pavement materials; tire/pavement phenomena; and bridge loadings, design, construction, monitoring and evaluation. LTI’s test track facility features a 1-mile oval with a special test section where test surfaces can be installed on a temporary basis for testing.

Materials Research Institute Facilities:

The Materials Research Institute (MRI) product evaluation laboratory is also available for NECEPT-related materials testing and new product evaluation. NECEPT’s access to these laboratories allows the faculty and staff to evaluate a wide range of materials with a wide range of analytical techniques.
